Nothing beats a half-pi shawl for straightforward relaxing knitting. Minimal counting and a long colour change gradient yarn make for a wonderfully soothing knitting experience. True, the last few rows are long but so worth it as you watch that yarn cake rapidly dwindle. Starting with a garter stitch centre this shawl moves out into an easy to memorise lace pattern, before finishing with a little more garter stitch - these rows are long - I can’t deny it - but as the colour change deepens you know you are getting closer to the end.

This shawl is named for the wonderful coastline at St Bees in Cumbria. Often deserted but always beautiful, the colour of the sea varies from deep blue on summer days to stormy grey in the depths of winter.
