The colourwork here looks quite complicated, but it’s easier than it seems. There’s no stranding; you just work each row in one of three colours in sequence. The staggered stripes are created because of the way yarns loop around each other in knit and purl stitches. A beginning knitter can make this scarf with little difficulty--if you can cast on, cast off, knit and purl, you can make this scarf. Use three closely related shades of neutrals to create a more subtle design, or colours with even more contrast to create a bright, exciting design.

My Pastel Tweed Baby Blanket pattern is based on the same principle, but creates a textured tweed effect rather than these staggered stripes.

SIZE: approximately 9” x 60”. To make a wider scarf, cast on extra stitches in groups of 8; to make a longer scarf, just keep knitting!

MATERIALS NEEDED:

• approximately 180 yards of each of three colours of Knitting Worsted Weight yarn for original (9” x 60”) size
• 4.5 mm knitting needles, or size needed to achieve tension

TENSION: 16 stitches and 28rows over 4 inches in garter stitch
