The Bavarian Crochet technique (sometimes known as a Catherine Wheel Granny Square) looks more difficult than it is. Because the blanket is done primarily in triple crochet it works up fast!

You only need 3 skeins of each color and a Size J crochet hook. Each square is 20 inches giving you large swatches of color while giving the illusion of lots of little stripes.
