Stained Glass Blanket Square
My Stained Glass Blanket is very popular and I had so many questions about it that I decided to do a tutorial series on YouTube and came up with this sampler square that can be used as a pillow front, a
fancy mug rug or even repeated and then seamed together to make a larger throw! Although the sample was knit in sock yarn it could be knit in any weight and the stitch count could be adjusted for what ever size squares you wish.
Finished Size:
Approximately 50g of fingering weight yarn made a 10.5” x 10.5” sampler (washed and blocked).
Gauge: Gauge is not particularly important however, if you wish to use it as a pillow front please make sure your gauge will provide the proper dimensions.
Materials Needed/Used
Needles: Size US 3 (3.25 mm). Straight needles or circulars may be used for the small squares but you will need longer needles or a long circular for the outside edge.
Yarn: Color A: Approximately 15 grams of an additional color for the edging surrounding each square and rectangle. Color B: 11 different mini skeins. When Color B is mentioned use one of the 11 mini skeins making sure that 3 will provide sufficient yardage for the Big Square and the two Rectangles.
Notions: Locking stitch markers. Stitch holders. Darning needle.
General Notes
You can change the basic stitch count of the base square to produce different square sizes. In my regular blanket each side of the base square has 22 stitches with a center stitch for 45 stitches total on the first row. In this sample, each side of the base square has 16 stitches with a center stitch, for 33 stitches total.
I knit all stitches on the wrong side rows. Some may choose to purl the center stitch which produces a different look. You may want to check out the Basic Mitered Square tutorial on my Fiber Jenn YouTube to see the difference.
I also weave in all my ends as I go. The Stained Glass Blanket tutorial series shows the method I use to weave in ends as I go.
