Standard Gauge Fairisle Round Yoke Cardigan
Finished Width
36 (40-44-48-52-56) inches;
92 (102-112-122-132-142) cm
Materials
Lightweight yarn, such as sock, fingering, or 4-ply, that will knit to correct gauge. Sample is knitted using two colors, and requires approximately 14-20oz main color and 3oz contrast. This does vary with the yarn, since some have more yardage per ounce or gram.
Gauge: 28 sts, 40 rows = 10 cm (7sts, 10 rows = 1 inch in stockinette) and
7 sts, 8.5 rows in Fair Isle.
This cardigan is knitted from the bottom upwards. the yoke is made in three sections. The back yoke simply continues on into the yoke after the last raglan decreases. right front is first seamed to the right sleeve, then the right yoke is knitted upwards from this joined unit; the left front and left sleeve are also seamed, then the yoke is knitted on this joined unit.
The pattern is written as a tutorial.
Since this pattern is meant to be an introduction to Fairisle yokes, there are only two colors in the yoke. The contrast color is removed after knitting through each tier, but the yarn is not cut; adding the contrast color back into the carriage when beginning the next tier eliminates yarn tails, and makes it much easier to sew and finish the yoke. You may, however, add more colors if you prefer; an ounce of each additional color is more than enough.
Although there is no current KnitALong running on the Facebook group for this pattern, many members are still knitting it, and you will find help and encouragement there. The direct link to Machine Knitting Round Yokes is here. You do need to ask to join as a member and agree to the rules, which are simply no selling or self promotion, and post only about round yoke garments (any style of round yoke is OK).
