The Staple Sweater is a knitted raglan sweater that is worked from the top down. This classic design has 5-6 inches of positive ease for a relaxed fit. It features a folded collar, 2 sleeve options, ribbed sleeve cuffs and hem, and ~perfect~ neck shaping.

The best part? It is made-to-measure using your unique body measurements and you can use any weight yarn! This sweater will fit everyone like a dream, and the simple design makes it a true closet staple.

Pattern Format:
The Staple Sweater is an interactive, made-to-measure pattern that calculates the number of stitches, rows, and yardage for a pattern. The benefit of this type of pattern is that it makes your pattern size inclusive to virtually any body size (theoretically, it should even work for an infant!) and it allows you to use any yarn and any gauge! This is done by allowing the user to type in their body’s measurements and gauge onto the pattern. Then, in the background, the pattern will calculate all the math within the pattern to fit the person perfectly.

It is recommended that the pattern is accessed through Adobe Reader.

Difficulty:
This pattern is for intermediate knitters or ambitious confident beginners.

Yarn:
You can use any weight and any size yarn for this pattern!

The amount of yarn you need will depend on your measurements as well as your gauge. There is a yarn estimate calculator within the pattern to provide you with a more precise estimate, or you can refer to the following estimates based on the Craft Yarn Council’s sizing standards and different yarn weights:

Bust measurement: 28-31 (32-35, 36-39, 40-43, 44-47) (48-51, 52-55, 56-59, 60-63) inches; 71-80 (81-90, 91-100, 101-110, 111-120) (121-130, 131-140, 141-150, 151-160) cm

Fingering weight: 1395 (1603, 1831, 2026, 2271) (2545, 2736, 2997, 3218) yards; 1275 (1465, 1674, 1852, 2076) (2327, 2502, 2740, 2942) meters

DK weight: 1161 (1319, 1497, 1674, 1869) (2099, 2269, 2488, 2645) yards; 1061 (1206, 1369, 1530, 1709) (1919, 2075, 2275, 2419) meters

Worsted weight: 786 (899, 1019, 1128, 1274) (1427, 1537, 1679, 1788) yards; 719 (822, 932, 1031, 1165) (1305, 1405, 1535, 1635) meters

Bulky weight: 728 (826, 931, 1041, 1159) (1314, 1404, 1547, 1658) yards; 665 (755, 852, 952, 1059) (1201, 1284, 1415, 1516) meters

Knitting Needles:
You can use any size circular needles for this pattern. I recommend using a needle size that creates a nice fabric with the yarn you’ve chosen to work with. If you’re not sure what needle size to go with, try the recommended needle size on your yarn’s label.

In terms of needle sizes, you will need:

  • Needle Size 1: Your main working needle size that you use to achieve gauge
  • Needle Size 2: .5mm smaller than needle size 1

In terms of cord lengths for your circular needles, you will need:

  • 12” (30cm) circular needles for Needle Sizes 1 and 2 for casting on, working the collar, and beginning the body and sleeves
  • 16”+ (40cm+) for Needles Sizes 1 and 2 (length of cord depends on your body/preferences) circular needles for working the body of the sweater
  • Double pointed needles (DPNs), 9-12” (27-30cm) circular needles, OR 36”+ (90cm+) circular needles to use with the magic loop method for Needle Sizes 1 and 2 for working the sleeves
