Our Starburst Mitts are snuggly to wear and surprisingly quick and easy to knit. The mosaic colorwork means you only need to work one color in a row, slipping a handful of stitches to create the motifs. The yarn’s unique blend of Coopworth lambswool, alpaca, and yak make the mitts warm, elastic, and strong enough to hold up to all the tasks hands do. In three sizes, and with a stretch garter-stitch fabric, the mitts comfortably fit a wide variety of hands. And they are designed with versatility in mind; they can be worn on either hand, with either the short or the long side covering the fingers, and with either the diamond star pattern or the twinkling burst motif featured on the palm.

Construction: These mitts are worked flat, sideways, and seamed with the three-needle bind off. The thumb stitches are reserved with spare yarn and later worked in the round. The colorwork pattern is a mosaic or slipped-stitch motif; only one color is worked each row, and the working color changes every right-side row.

Special Features: The left and right mitts mirror each other. Each mitt can be worn on either hand, with either motif facing the palm, and with either the short or the long side covering the fingers.

Sizes: Small(Medium, Large).

Dimensions: 6.5(7.75, 9) inches around, and 7.5(8.25, 9) inches long, after blocking.

Yarn: Why Knot Fibers Splendid (230 yds., 75% Coopworth Lambswool, 12.5% Alpaca, 12.5% Yak): 1 skein Red Spire (Color A), plus 1 skein Ripple (Color B).

Yardage: Approximately 160(190, 220) total yards, split evenly between the two colors.

Needles: Size 5 U.S. (3.75 mm) needles for working flat, plus the same for working in the round over a small number of stitches; or the size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge: 25 stitches and 48 rows in 4” (10 cm) in garter stitch, after blocking. Please make a gauge swatch and block it; this yarn grows substantially after a gentle soak.

Notions: Spare yarn for provisional cast on and thumb stitches; extra knitting needle size 5 (3.75 mm), or size needed to obtain gauge, for three-needle bind off; tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Instructions: The pattern includes written-out instructions, but the mosaic colorwork motif is only charted.

Techniques Used: Knit, purl, slipped stitches, working in the round, provisional cast on, three-needle bind off.

As Modeled: Shown here is the small size.
