A fishermen’s sweater that takes its inspiration from the golden brown colour of the wool and resembles the pieces of kelp washed up along the shore.

Underwater kelp forests are the perfect hiding places for beautiful and strange creatures like starfish and this gansy combines two different starfish designs and a snaking cable pattern that perfectly symbolizes the kelp, swaying gently back and forth with the surge of the sea, a movement continued in the spiral rib pattern for the hem, cuffs and neckband.

Finished measurements 37.75 (42, 46, 50, 54)“ or 96 (107, 117, 127, 137) cm.

Recommended Yarn: Jamieson’s Soft Shetland (100% wool, 120y / 110m per 56g), 14 (15, 16, 17, 18) skeins. Col Soft Spice.

Needles: US 7 and 8 / 4.5 and 5.0mm circular needles.

The sweater is knitted in the round to the armhole, then split and back and front are finished separately. The sleeves are knitted flat and a shoulder strap is used to join the front and back shoulders.

The rib and main pattern is in written form (for both knitting in the round and flat), but the Starfish and Kelp patterns are only given as charts.

Skill level: The pattern includes twist stitches, cables and knitting in the round. You should be able to read patterns from a chart.
