This hat was inspired by nights spent with my Dearest, gazing up at the milky way, talking about space travel and Doctor Who, all of the best nerdy stuff. I wanted to make him something special for the cold winter nights approaching, so I designed and knitted this hat just for him.

He is my biggest supporter, he’s encouraging me to dive into knitwear design, and follow all of my silly little passions in life. He’s my starshine, my best friend, and my partner in our travels through the milky way. This hat was made with nothing but love, and I hope you love making it.

The pattern is written with 3 sizes, Small (Medium, Large), or Child, (Teen, Adult). There is information in the pattern for further size adjustments if needed! With the largest size written, it should not take more than 210 yards, though out of the 210 yards you should have very little left if you knit the largest size.

The main color yarn is the worsted weight, I used Malabrigo Rios in Sand Bank, and then dyed it using some homemade black walnut dye to darken it and give the effect of an early night sky. The contrasting color is in fingering weight, I used Tehete 100% Merino in Khaki, with no color changing. With a dark main color and lighter contrasting color in a lighter weight held together, the goal was to create the illusion of stars painted in the night sky.

Gauge: 44 rows by 22 stitches makes 4”x4” in fisherman’s rib in the round, unblocked.
