Get out those needles and start working, because winter is coming!

I am one of those odd people who have never seen an episode of Game of Thrones. However, I have read the books several times over, and this little sweater features the Stark family sigil as described in the books: a large grey wolf racing across an icy-white field. The back of the pullover warns that “winter is coming,” the Stark motto. You’ll enjoy dressing your favorite little one in this cozy button-neck pullover when the cold sets in, just keep them away from those pesky white walkers!

This sweater is knitted flat and the pieces are sewn together. The wolf is worked using the intarsia technique, while the motto on the back is worked with the stranded knitting technique. The pattern includes charts for both designs. The drop sleeves are sewn into the sweater, then the neckline is knitted with three buttonholes for easy on-and-off over those big baby noggins!

This pattern includes five sizes: 3-6 months (22” chest), 6-9 months (23” chest), 9-12 months (24” chest), 12-18 months (25” chest), and 18-24 months (26” chest).

The gauge is 22 st and 30 rows over 4” in stockinette stitch, and 23 st and 28 rows over 4” in pattern. For this sweater, I used Bernat Softee Baby (100% acrylic, 362 yds per ball). You will need 1 (2, 2, 2, 2) balls of White #02000, and 1 ball of Flannel #30044, or equivalent amounts in a DK weight yarn. You will also need circular or straight needles in size US 3 and 4, or whatever size necessary to get the gauge.

This pattern is intended for intermediate knitters. You will need to use the intarsia and the stranded knitting techniques in order to complete the wolf and motto designs. You will also need to read a chart, as I have not written line-by-line instructions for the wolf or the motto. Beyond these intermediate elements, the construction of the sweater is very basic. The pattern includes written instructions for the five sweater sizes listed above, full color charts, color photographs, a schematic, and a photo tutorial for the intarsia and stranded knitting technique.
