Starry Starry Cowl
I live in the Vale of York next to the River Ouse. It is a place of big skies and arable fields. The river used to be the only way to carry goods to and from the major port of Hull on the Humber estuary. Like the coastal fishermen, the boatmen of the River Ouse also wore ganseys. This cowl is inspired by the simple stitch patterns of those garments, featuring a twisted rib to echo the cables that always twist in one direction and the definitive and bold Humber Star motif around the centre.
When I put this idea together my intention was to create one of those patterns that you turn to if you want to quickly produce a gift or maybe a series in different colours for a whole bunch of folk. I don’t know about you, but I feel that a star is at the same time a symbol of wonder, festivity, hope and guidance.
The cowl is knitted in the round and instructions are given for DK and Aran weight yarns.
The finished sizes are:
Aran version 25cm (10 inches) tall and 58cm (23 inches) round DK version 27cm (10.5 inches) tall and 62cm (24.5 inches) round
Aran version uses approximately 144m (158 yards) DK version uses approximately 182m (199 yards)
I hope that you enjoy your journey upstream with the Humber Star.
