I am very smitten with the Twisted Fifties Fadients by Dibadu. Especially the limited editions of the Murmeliewelten sets she offers every month. Hence, I wanted to create a design that would do each individual color justice as well as the whole gradient. The outcome was Starry Starry Night, a swirly modular affair that resembles the brushstrokes of Vincent van Gogh paintings. Some of you might remember the Don McLean song about Vincent by which the title of this pattern was inspired. I presented the idea to Barbara and she created the stunning Junoxsee set as the color of the month for June, that picks up the hues that Vincent van Gogh used in a lot of his works.
Starry Starry Night is based on 4 differently shapes modules. Each module requires roughly the same amount of yarn, and therefore, you will be able to max out on this gorgeous fiber luxury. You simply start with the first skein and knit as many of the first shape as you can and the rest will follow.
You don’t even need to knit a swatch. Just use a needle that will give your work a nice drape. The size will depend on the tightness of your knitting and the number of modules you can get out of one skein. My Starry Starry Night made of Junoxsee is 13.5“/34cm wide and 76“/193cm long.
Of course, you can use other yarns as well. 4 skeins of 3.5oz/100g of individual colors that go well together will do. Or you can use four different color gradient like I did when knitting a second version with Schoppel Zauberball. I used the colors: Überdosis, Elefantentreffen, Alles Paletti and Tee Zeremonie to create a shawl of 82”/208cm length and 13,5”/34cm width.
Although Starry Starry NIght is a modular knit there is no seaming involved as you will attach the second half to the first as you go. To create the shapes I applied short rows with the wrap and turn method. You will find photo tutorials on this technique as well as the joining methods. If you prefer other short row methods they can be used as well.
All instructions are given in written and charted form along with graphics to explain the setup. But if you have any questions of feel like you struggle, send me a personal note on Ravelry or an email and I’ll be happy to help you along the way. You can also join the Funnies Knitters group that Barbara has created for the Dibadu lovers. She was kind enough to devote one thread to Ursa Major Knits designs. So you can ask your questions there as well. We might even do KALs at some point. You are welcome to join us.
Happy Knitting
