Stars, Birds, and Butterflies
Simple boatneck pullover trimmed with an array of star, bird, and butterfly motifs, is worked in stranded two-color knitting. Lower borders of front and back are worked separately, back and forth in rows, with back border 1½“ longer than front border. Body is worked in the round to the start of the neck shaping, with steeks for the armhole openings. Front neck shaping is worked back and forth in short-rows to base of neckband; then patterned boat neckband is worked in the round on all stitches to the shoulders. Sleeves are worked in the round with facings at the upper edges to cover the raw edges of the steeked armhole openings.
Yarn: Fingering-weight, super fine yarn
- About 150 (175, 200, 225) grams of a medium main color (A)
- About 150 (175, 200, 225) grams of a dark second color (B)
- About 20 (30, 40, 50) grams of a light color (C)
- About 50 (55, 60, 65) grams of a bright facing and welt color (D)
- Small amounts of two accent colors (D and E)
- Model in the book used Isager Wool 1 (100% wool; 310m / 340yds; 50g / 1.76oz), 3 (4, 4, 5) skeins for Color A; and Isager Alpaca 2 (50% merino, 50% alpaca; 247m / 270yds; 50g / 1.76oz), 3 (4, 4, 5) skeins for Color B; 1 skein for Color C; 1 (2, 2, 2,) skeins for Color D; and 1 skein each for Colors E and F.
- Note: Some of the colors used in the model have been discontinued; substitute colors of your choice.
Needles:
- Body and sleeves - size 3 mm / US 1, 40 cm / 16” and 60 cm / 24” circular needles, and set of 4 or 5 double-pointed needles
- Facings and welts - size 2.5 mm / US 1, two 60 cm / 24” circular needles
- Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge
