Steeking Dandelion
Steeking Dandelion is a cup cosy knitted mainly in the round using a two-colour stranded technique in natural shades of pure wool, a bold geometric design and of course, a steek.
The stitch patterns are inspired by an historic engraving of a dandelion root viewed under a microscope by the pioneering botanist Nehemiah Grew. In the late 1600s he was one of the first people to record and study the deceptively simple, rhythmic and organised beauty of plant cells. The pattern is designed to reflect those qualities.
The other main feature of this little project is the steek. I like to design my pieces in the round in order to add to the feeling of rhythm and flow as you knit. However, if you want to keep to that and create something flat, then you will need to know how to steek. This is, in effect a little tutorial on how I learnt to steek using the crochet method with many thanks to Remily Knits for this technique and her version of this tutorial.
I hope that success with this gives you the confidence to tackle bigger projects in the future.
Happy Steeking!
Suggested Yarn
I used West Yorkshire Spinners Fleece Jacob DK. Pure non-superwash wool like this is the safest choice for steeking because the fibres stick together so well.
