Knit a garter stitch triangle shawl with an angular twist! Not a literal twist though. Just a different approach to building on itself.

The gold-to-red gradient shawlette is made from handspun yarn. Since it’s on the smaller side, I added a crochet border and buttons to make it more wearable as a kerchief.

If you make this version but don’t crochet—or don’t want to—you can get the same functionality with i-cord.

Steppe Shawl is really one of those projects where gauge isn’t too vital, and the finished dimensions are determined by the yarn you’ve got on hand or the size of shawl you want —gather up some suitable yarn, aim for a fabric you like, and enjoy this top-down shawl! A kerchief can be knit in one 300-440 yard skein of sport- or sockweight yarn, but you’ll probably want two skeins to knit a full-sized wrap.

Measurements:
Knit until you have a full-sized shawl, or add buttons for the kerchief shown, which is 15”/38cm deep through the center spine, and about 34”/81cm across the top.

Materials:

• 300-880 yards of fingering- to sportweight yarn or scraps (sample shown in handspun merino blend gradient singles)
• 1 24-48” circular needle in US5/3.75mm, or size needed for gauge. (Work is flat; if you’re knitting a full-size shawl, you’ll probably want a longer needle.)
• Tapestry needle
• 2 removable stitch markers
• Optional: crochet hook to suit yarn
• Optional, for kerchief version (shown): five or six 9/16” buttons

Gauge:
Gauge is 18 sts and 40 rows over 4”/10cm of blocked garter stitch, worked flat. Please be sure to check your gauge!
