Stepping Stones Shawl
Sometimes, the world rushes by and it feels like we’re dangerously close to being swept away by the currents. To get through it, we look for stepping stones - small spaces of solid ground that can get us through to the other side.
The Stepping Stones Shawl is designed to provide those moments of solid ground. Simple stitches combine with subtle texture for a shawl that’s mindless, requires minimal counting, and can easily be put down and picked back up as needed.

Sample
Sample used Tina’s Toasty Toes Toasty Yak Toes, 523yds/120g in Melted Crayons
Thanks to Tina’s Toasty Toes for providing the yarn for the pattern sample!
Yarn, Yardage, and Colors
The sample uses fingering but the pattern works well in anything from a fingering to a super bulky. It’s easily adjusted to size so you can work to any yardage.
The single ply makes the texture pop, and 4-ply or 8-ply yarns are a great choice for the same reason.
The pattern works well to break up variegated colors and minimize pooling, but the texture may get lost in highly variegated colors.
Skills Required
ch, dc, sl st, blo, counting rows and sts, working flat
Construction
The pattern is worked in one piece from side to side. It starts at the skinny end and increases are worked along one side to shape it.
Modifications and Adjustments
Notes are included for adjusting the following: length of the shawl; size of teeth; working with no teeth; number of rows between each tooth
Overview of the Finished Object
The shawl is long and skinny. The top curves upwards slightly and the bottom has small sawteeth. It’s mostly solid rows, and a line of texture runs from the corner of each tooth to the top of the shawl.

Printing
Both a regular and printer friendly version are available! The regular version includes large photos on the first page and the last two pages, so print accordingly. The printer-friendly version has only one photo on the cover page, and less spacing so the pattern takes up fewer pages. For more details on what the printer-friendly version includes, see this page. If you are working from the printer-friendly version and are having trouble with a pattern, I strongly recommend checking the regular version. The text will be easier to read and it might have more detailed instructions.
Screen Reader Compatibility
The main pattern pdf is designed to be screen reader compatible. The text is all in one column and headers are formatted according to the style sheet. The pattern is written out completely and the images have descriptive alt text.
