Still Waking Up is a super snuggly triangular shawl, knit from the top down in garter stitch, using short rows. A very relaxing knit, easy yet interesting!

Swedish translation coming soon! / Mönstret kommer på svenska inom kort!

Please note that the sample shown was knit using double strands of yarn throughout, so the gauge and yardage above reflect that. The second strand of yarn is totally optional; leaving it out will result in a slightly different but equally beautiful shawl. See below for details.

Yarn
The sample shown was knit with double strands of yarn throughout: one strand of fingering (4ply) weight yarn held together with one strand of kidsilk lace (2ply) weight.

The extra strand of kidsilk yarn makes this shawl super snuggly and warm, but is totally optional.

This shawl would be great in other yarn weights as well.

Gauge
If you choose to work with a different yarn weight or single strands of yarn throughout, adjust the gauge accordingly. For example, if you leave out the kidsilk strand and work with one strand of fingering weight yarn only, you might want to go down in needle size to 4mm/US6.

Gauge is not crucial as long as you get a fabric you are happy with. Just be aware that knitting at a different gauge will affect the finished size of the shawl, as well as the amount of yarn needed.

Finished measurements
The size is easily customizable. The sample shown has a wingspan of approx 200cm/79”, and is 95cm/37” deep at centre spine.

Yes yes, I’m aware that the sample is absolutely massive! I wasn’t planning on releasing this as a pattern until I started getting so many requests. I was just knitting this shawl for myself; it’s my idea of the perfect shawl to snuggle up with on the sofa on a cold, rainy day :)

Yarn requirements
You can easily adjust the size of your shawl according to how much yarn you have, by simply making more or fewer stripes.

If working with double strands of yarn to the same size as the sample (oversized!) you’ll need approx 800m/875 yards fingering (4ply) weight yarn in colour A and 500m/545 yards fingering in colour B and approx 800m/875 yards lace weight (2ply) kidsilk yarn in colour A and 500m/545 yards kidsilk in colour B.

A more “normal” size using double strands would require a bit less than 500m/545 yards fingering in colour A, 500m/545 yards kidsilk in colour A, 350m/380 fingering in colour B, and 350m/380 kidsilk in colour B.

If working with single strands of yarn you’ll need much less, obviously. For example, using fingering weight yarn approx 500m/545 yards in colour A and 350m/380 yards in colour B would be plenty enough for a smaller shawl.

This design is heavily inspired by Veera Välimäki’s gorgeous and well-known shawls, in particular her unique and clever use of short rows.
