Stjarna Smucks
Stjarna Smucks are knitted flat from the back of the foot, down and under the heel. Stitches are cast on over the instep and the foot is worked in the round to the toe. A three-needle cast-off is worked at the toe. The sides of the heel are then seamed closed, and the ribbing is worked at the same time as stitches are picked up from the smuck.
Two sizes are given – the second size gives a deeper heel and larger foot circumference, and a slightly longer foot length. Instructions are given for lengthening the smuck to help customize it to your size.
A Shetland Winter has the benefit of a truly dark night skies with very little light pollution in the rural areas. The Stjarna smucks design is loosely based on the winter stars, as they join up to form a pattern.
The smucks (the Shetland word for slippers) are made in Aran weight Shetland wool for warmth and comfortable padding underfoot. The design uses two colours only. Please pay particular attention to the required tension as my knitting tends to be close.
