These mittens were created on a wintry night in Stockholm, while the slush in the street outside was still deciding whether to freeze and turn the pavement into a surprise ice skating rink, or to just absorb some more grime and car exhaust for added splashing fun. The city lights were occasionally dancing by my window, turning the flowers on the windowsill now orange, now blue. Sturdy mittens were in short supply, but there was yarn aplenty and an idea in my head.

The pattern on the cuff is one of many clever techniques taught by Latvian knitting experts Sena Klets in their workshops and retreats. I’ve learnt ever so much from them! (And it’s in no way their fault that I’m still a mediocre knitter - I just don’t have the patience to carry yarn in the back unless absolutely necessary, sorry.)
