Stocking with Provision of a Second Heel and Toe
by Ann Budd
Modeled after a vintage pattern in Weldon’s Practical Needleworker, this sock pattern offers an alternative for knitting tired of darning worn heels and toes. The sock is knitted in four separate parts so that the heel or toe section can be removed and replaced with newly knitted sections. Although there are visible seams between the sections, they can be more comfortable to the wearer than the thick areas created by heavy darning.
Use a simple whipstitch to sew the sections together. When holes develop in the heel and toe, carefully remove the seaming yarn, and replace with the new pieces.
