From the pattern description: This pair of knee-length stockings was inspired by the country stockings found in many parts of Europe. The clocks, a name probably derived from the resemblance of the ankle design to the hands of a clock, have been created with knit and purl stitches. The silk stockings of the wealthy often had embroidery or fancy patterns at the ankles and the style was adopted for general use. On these stockings, there is a fancy pattern down the back of the leg to decorate the “seam line” and to aid in working the leg shaping.
