Stormy Night Mittens
Warm mittens on a stormy night are so necessary! Covered in snow flakes, snowballs, and stars, these mittens have a sore thumb (side thumb) construction for comfort. The palm pattern is almost as detailed as the hand pattern, so mix and match for your favorites.
These are “62-stitch” mittens. Change the size by changing the gauge. Testers used between 200 and 300 yards of yarn total, depending on weight/size. Approximately 1/3 contrast color and 2/3 background color.
Gauge suggestions:
6 sts per inch for a “men’s medium/large”
7 sts per inch for a “women’s large” / “men’s small”
8 sts per inch for a “women’s medium”
9 sts per inch for a “women’s small”/ “child large”
Testers found that adjusting needle size was more important to gauge than yarn. Yarns used by testers were fingering, sport, and DK weight.
Here is a great video for picking up stitches in a mitten thumb that doesn’t leave a gap that needs to be sewn in later. In this video, you pick up the stitches, and then decrease them out. For my pattern, you’ll just work them.
