Stranding Room Only
These whimsical hats are a great project for trying out stranded two-color knitting. The pattern offers four sizes so everyone can have a congregation of our favorite fleecy friends crowning their crowns.
SIZES: Size B (Baby, 13.5” circumference), Size C (Child, 15” circumference), Size AS (Adult Small, 19” circumference), Size AL (Adult Large, 21” circumference)
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
Yarn: One skein each of two contrasting colors of worsted weight yarn. You’ll be safe buying approximately 100 grams (~200 yds) for main color and 50 grams (~100 yards) for contrasting color. See sample amounts below.
• Size B (Baby, 13.5” circumference) HEDGEHOG FIBERS – MERINO ARAN: 100% Machine Washable Merino Wool, 100 grams (180 yards), approximately 40 yards main color (Ink) and 10 yards contrasting color (Hey Day).
• Size C (Child, 15” circumference) QUINCE & CO – LARK: 100% American Wool, 50 grams (134 yards), approximately 70 yards of main color (Rosa Rugosa) and 16 yards of contrasting color (Iceland).
• Size AS (Adult Small, 19” circumference) MAGPIE FIBERS – NEST WORSTED: 100% Non-Super-Wash Corriedale, 100g (210 yards), approximately 120 yards of main color (Midnight Beaver) and 25 yards of contrasting color (Strange Brew).
• Size AL (Adult Large, 21” circumference) QUINCE & CO – LARK: 100% American Wool, 50 grams (134 yards), approximately 134 yards of main color (Peacock) and 50 yards of contrasting color (Stream). (Note: I worked the ribbing in the contrasting color on this sample.)
Needles:
• For sizes B and C: Either double-pointed needles OR 40” circular needles (for magic loop) in US7 (4.5mm) and US8 (5.0mm)
• For sizes AS and AL: Either
o 40” circular needles (for magic loop) in US7 (4.5mm) and US8 (5.0mm)
o OR 16” circular needles in US7 (4.5mm) and 16” circular needle and double-pointed needles in US8 (5.0mm)
Notions: Stitch markers (at least 10), tapestry needle.
Gauge: 19 stitches and 22 rows per 4 inches on larger needle in Standing Sheep pattern. 18 sts and 24 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch knit flat. To save time, take time to check gauge.
Construction Notes: Hats are knit in the round from the bottom up. Hats start with ribbing on smaller needles. Switch to larger needles after ribbing. Body is worked in two colors to crown. Crown consists of a series of decreases. Remaining stitches are tied off at the end.
