Strickland socks are knit cuff down, and joined at the toe using Kitchener stitch. A simple (and very easy to memorize) lace pattern is worked around the leg and on the top of the foot, while stockinette is worked across the sole. Pattern includes instructions for a short row heel, but comfortable knitters can substitute their preferred heel technique!

Written and charted instructions are provided for the stitch pattern.

These socks are written for a women’s size 8-ish foot, but modifying the pattern is quite simple to accommodate different sizes (suggestions included in the pattern).

Donna Strickland is a Canadian physicist and pioneer in pulse lasers and was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize for her work in chirped pulse amplification. Among many important scientific and research applications, CPA is used around the world in laser eye surgery, cancer treatment, and technology manufacturing. She is a recipient of the Order of Canada- it is an honour to name this pattern after her brilliance and ambition.
