This design was inspired by my daughter Matilda, who just loves to model my hand knits!
Matilda is just at home in a pretty summer dress as she is in leggings and a long-sleeved t-shirt. Here’s a cardigan that suits any outfit she chooses, whether dressy or casual. We both love the pops of colour at the sleeve caps - they’re fun to knit and lend the cardigan a distinctly modern vibe.
Stripe It Up! is a completely seamless cardigan, knit in one piece from the top down. The sleeve caps are formed using raglan shaping and intarsia joins. With simple, clear instructions, this is a quick project that will fly off your needles.
The pattern includes a schematic as well as links to some helpful video tutorials on making your intarsia look perfect.
Yarn Quantities
Stripe It Up! calls for Knit Picks Swish DK:
MC 2 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4) balls
CC1-3: 1 ball each
Or DK weight yarn as follows:
MC: 200 (250, 300, 350, 400, 450) yards
CC1-3: 20 (25, 25, 25, 30, 35) yards each
If you’re diving into your stash for the stripes, just remember - fingering/sock weight yarn held double is approximately equal to DK-weight. Maybe you can use up some sock yarn scraps? Whatever you choose, you’ll have fun combining your colours!
Notes on Sizing
To ensure an accurate fit, measure the child and choose a size that matches their chest rather than their age. Adjust length of body as needed, using the schematic.
The garment is designed to fall open from the chest down, to show off a pretty dress underneath. This allows some flexibility on sizing.
