1940s Striped Jumper with bow ties

Statement striped Bow Jumper. A really successful design that has ties at the neck and puff sleeves.

I have made this jumper a few times for custom orders and it has always been very successful, so have decided to write up how I’ve adapted the original 1940s pattern for modern 4-ply wool.

The pattern differs in a few ways from the original in that it uses Fair Isle to create the colour work stripes rather than slipped stitches (this creates a more stretchy fabric). I’ve also adapted the pattern to suit modern 4 ply wool and have added an additional size to fit a 36” bust.

The new pattern is for three sizes:
a 28” - 30” bust (about a UK size 6-8),
a 31” - 33” bust (about a UK size 10)
a 34” - 36” bust (about a UK size 12).

The adapted pattern also includes information about how to block pieces of fabric and how to set in sleeves plus there is more detail included about how to complete the button band and neck.

Pattern includes

  • Easy to follow written instructions about how to make the jumper and a list of materials required
  • a photo tutorial on how to complete a stretchy rib cast on (an alternative to casting on using the thumb method)

The finished jumper measures 20 inches (back) and 13 inches (armpit to hem). Both measurements are adjustable.
