This is a scarf you can make as long or short as you like. The stripes go in perpendicular directions due to alternating vertical slip stitch striping and horizontal garter stitch striping. It is very easy to make it the length you want, or until you run out of yarn, which makes it a GREAT stash buster!

Gauge is not important since it is a scarf and doesn’t require fit. However, you should definitely swatch because the slip stitch pattern tends to be denser than the garter rows. If you feel the garter rows are too loose compared to the slip stitch rows, you can solve this by going down a needle size for the garter rows. My sample is shown using the same needle size throughout.

Regarding yarn, you will need equal yardage in two colors of worsted weight. I used about 600 yards of each color to make the scarf quite long, but if you are shopping your stash, you can use less if you are making a shorter scarf. I listed the yarns I used, but In the Deep Hue Sea doesn’t list this fractal yarn on Ravelry. The most important considerations in yarn selection are to choose yarns of the same weight and to choose contrasting colors. You can use any fractal spun that is the same weight as your solid, a handspun, a gradient, or even two solids that contrast well.
