Stripes on Stripes
This is an updated and rewritten pattern from “Half Moon” which was designed for Be Sweet Bamboo yarn. The yarn is now discontinued :(
This new pattern is written with more clear step-by step instructions and you can knit with many different yarn choices.
The stripes are worked with two contrasting color yarn carried from the edge. (means no cutting and minimum weaving! :) Ruffles are made with simple short row repeats.
This shawl is great for both Summer and Winter to knit and wear. (Please see YARN section below for more info.) The photos shown are knitted with El Linio 100% linen yarn. (Natural x Navy)
The pattern comes with easy to follow Increasing / Decreasing chart.
Simple and interesting enough for vacation knitting.
YARN
- The yardage above is a total of 2 colors of yarns.
- Any sport ~ DK weight yarn works. You need 100g each color, total 200g.
- If you want to make a bigger shawl and have extra yardage, you can simply add more rows in the straight knitting rows.(Section 3)
- The linen yarn is a great choice for summer shawl, but please be aware that wet blocking will make a huge difference both in the size and texture. (Good way!! --- bigger and softer as you wear.)
NEEDLES
- For Linen / Cotton yarn - US 5 ~ 6.
- For Wool yarn - US 6 ~ 7.
- If you want to make the shawl bigger, please knit with a slightly bigger gauge.(Using bigger size needles.)
- You can use long straight needles or 24”(or longer) circular needles.
BLOCKING
Blocking makes a huge difference with Garter sts. The sts open up and the shawl becomes so much softer and bigger. I recommend soaking completely in water and squeeze with towel and dry onto flat surface. Blocking pins are not necessary, but you may want to shape the body to half moon shape and stretch ruffles length way a couple of times in the drying process.
Enjoy wearing in endless ways!
