Once your project is finished, what do you do with the bit of yardage you have leftover?

Of course you save the partial skeins that would come in handy to use as a contrast color for a smaller project. But what do you do when you only have 20 or 30 yards left?

Since I can’t bear to waste even a couple yards of a nice yarn, I have a couple large tupperware boxes full of tiny balls from projects past. But since I keep producing tiny balls of scrap yarn, and I don’t want to dedicate an entire room to their storage, I decided it was time to create a project to use them up! And so the “Strips of Bits” scarf was born!

This scarf is adjustable in every way.

Want it longer or shorter? Just change the cast-on number, making sure to keep it a multiple of 4.

Want it wider or narrower? Just knit for more rows or less.

You can use any number of colors for this scarf.

You can use a variety of light-weight yarns. The sample scarves used light-weight and heavier fingering as well as sport-weight yarn all in the same scarves. You could also make this scarf out of heavier weights of yarn - just make sure to cast on less stitches so it doesn’t end up 12’ long!

You can knit it as shown in the pattern charts, or you can take the ideas from the charts and alternate the textures as you desire.

There are even two ways to construct this scarf - choose to knit it flat, or to knit every row on the RS (almost like you’re knitting in the round, except you will not join the ends together).

So if you have 700 - 800 yds of light-weight yarn on hand and are looking for a colorful winter project to make, this is just what you’ve been looking for!

Techniques Used:
• Stranded Knitting (working with 2 colors)
• Knitting Flat, or working every row on the Right Side (you can choose)
• Knitting and Purling
• Tying Overhand Knots
• Cable Cast-On (tutorial video link included)
• Alternating (P1, K1) Bind-off
• Reading simple charts

Materials:
• Approximately 700 - 800yds of light-weight yarn
• US Size 4 / 3.5mm circular needle with a 40” cable
• Yarn Needle
