STUPENDOUS STRIPES CARDIGAN
Self striping yarn does a lot of the work here. The various pieces are knitted from different directions to create the effects. Sleeves are sideways knitted and shaped with short rowing.
This design works for mid-gauge machines and some standards. This sample is made on the Artisan 70-D mid-gauge at stitch size 6. I made another sweater using the same yarn on the Superba at stitch size 12. I matched gauge on a Brother at stitch size 10 but the fabric on the Brother does feel a little bit denser. The mid-gauge hobby machines are not really recommended because a ribber is very desirable for the project but a determined knitter could accomplish it by re-forming stitches to make the ribbed section. The instructions reference a ribber. On mid-gauge machines other than the Artisan, the number on the stitch dial will probably be smaller than 6 as the stitch dials on other brands are calibrated a bit differently.
Gauge in stockinette is 6 stitches/9 rows/inch. Row gauge in knit 1, purl 1 aka 1 x 1 ribbing with the stitch dial set at 2 numbers smaller than for stockinette is 7.5 rows/“. If you don’t get this gauge, that is OK but the row count for the yoke pieces will need adjusting. See notes in the yoke section.
Sizes finish to 4044, 48, 52, 56, 60 bust. The shape is boxy and kimono-like so ease of 8-10” is suggested. The garment finishes to 30” long for the first 3 sizes and 31 for the larger 3 sizes so the hip measurement must be considered as well as the bust.
Sleeves will fall between the elbow and wrist on most wearers.
