Sugar Season
Sugar season. There are small signs of spring everywhere, from the arrival of migratory song birds vying for territory over the still-frozen marsh, to the pale white blooms of snowdrops peeping over last night’s snow. The buds on the trees are starting to swell, and the sap is running in the sugar bush.
This time of year it is still cold enough to want a warm hat or cowl, but warm enough to not want both. Sugar Season is about options and choices and change; a hat or a cowl at need, with two possible ‘right’ sides, this piece allows four looks in one.
Materials Needed:
- @205 yards each two contrasting colours of sport weight yarn
- 3.5mm (US size 3) circular needle, 16” or long enough to magic loop
- 1 stitch marker to mark start/end of round
- 9 additional markers to mark repeat sections
Gauge:
20 stitches by 30 rows = 4 inches/10 centimeters, in doubleknitting
Complete instructions are written; the colourwork body is also charted.
A Note on Choosing Colours
Because the pattern of this piece relies upon single stitches moving in diagonal lines, clear solid colours with high contrast are recommended. A gradient yarn may be used as one of the colours provided that the contrasting yarn is a clear contrast to all the shades of the gradient. Variegates and speckles are not recommended for this piece.
