Inspired by one of the best places to spot Shetland’s summer visitors, Sumburgh mool is a cowl that features the headland and lighthouse at Sumburgh as well as a puffin (of course!) Mool is a Shetland word for a headland or a mouth. There are options for two widths, and you can choose from a taller single layer cowl with puffins flying in the distance, or a shorter double layer cowl with peerie fish on the inside! The colourwork is knit with only two colours at a time, with the accent details duplicate stitched on afterwards.

single layer sample is made in Grindischool jumperweight (MC mid grey, CC1 dark grey, CC2 charcoal) and Jamieson & Smith 2ply jumperweight (AC copper)
For double layer cowl (approx):
MC: 130-165m | CC: 130-165m | AC: 25-35m
double layer sample is made in Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift (MC pebble, CC mirrie dancers, AC ginger)

approx 28 st and 32 rows per 10cm in colourwork
medium adult 56cm/22” (large adult 64cm/25”) finished circumference
taller (single layer) cowl is 25cm/10” high
shorter (double layer) cowl is 15cm/6” high

notions
2.5mm (or size needed to meet gauge) 60cm circular needle (or DPNs if you prefer)
2.25mm (or size below gauge needle) 60cm circular needle (or DPNs if you prefer)
smooth scrap yarn and crochet hook (for provisional cast on - double layer cowl only)
stitch markers - to mark pattern repeats + 1 contrasting for the beginning of the round
darning needle
