The blarf is an airy, long and wide rectangular scarf that occupies the territory somewhere between a small blanket and scarf. A blarf is an essential travel accessory that can be worn as a loose summer scarf during the day and around the shoulders to chase the chill as the evening breeze sets in. It can be tossed into a carry-on bag and used as a cozy substitute for those scratchy airline blankets.

The design is highly accommodating to crochet styles and preferences. Gauge is not important. What’s important is that you make a blarf that is useful to your particular lifestyle. I live on the East Coast of the U.S. where the hot sticky summers call for a lighter blarf. For the one pictured, I used a mixture of fingering and DK weight yarn with cotton content and a 5mm hook to achieve a blarf that is lofty, lightweight and packable. If your circumstances demand a blarf with more substance, please feel free to use a heavier yarn.
