This is an asymmetric triangle shawl, begun at the tip with a few stitches and growing in width as you progress.

The inspiration for this pattern was taken from the (all-too-short) summer garden season here in Vermont. This shawl grows from the tilling of the soil in early Spring to the rambunctious over-growth of the late season Summer garden, and the patterning grows more complex. Never fear – the lace patterns are very straightforward, and any level knitter should be able to enjoy making this shawl. I’ve included a few helpful hints along the way to encourage those who may think it’s too complicated for them! Take your time and enjoy the knit!

I used a beautiful naturally-dyed fingering weight farm yarn from Wing & A Prayer Farm in Shaftsbury, VT, as the basis for this pattern. The slightly rustic nature of the yarn and the lovely coloring (direct from the plants themselves!) show the stitch definition perfectly. It will work in any yarn, really, but for heavier yarns you will need to adjust your needle size accordingly. If you swatch, you can adjust your fabric density to your preference - but gauge is not important for any other reason on this pattern.

1 skein of any fingering weight yarn should be more than adequate for this shawl. The textures will show better on a non-variegated yarn. Others have suggested doing the different sections of the pattern in different colors and I think it would be lovely in a gradient.
