This pattern is worked in rows and is basically half of a granny square. You can work fewer or more rows to change the finished size. I reccomend a fingering weight silk or a silk blend yarn for drape and to keep it light weight, but any yarn could be substituted, although it will alter the appearance depending on the weight of the yarn. I also reccomend blocking when finished to open up the stitches.
