Summer Sontag
This pattern is
available from payhip.com
for £4.00.
This pattern uses the original shaping from an 1861 pattern in The Ladies’ Companion (Volume XIX - second series) page 89. However, the borders are completely my own design.
The Sontag was made popular in the Victorian Era by Hentiette Sontag who was a singer. It is different from a triangle shawl because of the shaping which makes it curve to the body more.
The body of the Sontag is knit using garter stitch, and then the borders are crochet on afterward.
I have written the instructions in a way that you can increase or decrease the size of the Sontag to fit your own needs.
- I used - DK Cotton (So Crafty, Knit&Purl Denim Yarn) mine used 340g but it may differ depending on the size you make
- 5mm knitting needles, I sized up my needles to give the shawl more drape. The standard size would be 4mm. I found 2 pairs useful but it is not strictly necessary
- 5mm crochet hook
- 3.5mm crochet hook
