This pattern is for an overlay mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.

Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.

The sample square uses approximate 4 oz of yarn total, if using medium weight yarn (weight #4). The background rows use 2 oz total (I used 5 different colors for the background rows to create sunset stripes & an ocean section at the bottom).

I added a crocheted starfish applique, but you could add other cute embellishments if desired.
