Sumu is a triangular shawl with stripes following the Fibonacci sequence with minor modifications. The shawl is knit top-down in garter stitch, starting from the neck. Sumu means fog in Finnish.

The size is customizable to some extent, and will also depend on the row gauge via the yarn and needles chosen. The model shawl measured 153 cm (60 in) wide and 70 cm (27.5 in) deep before blocking, 174 cm (68.5 in) wide and 78 cm (31 in) deep blocked.

Row gauge is more important than stitch gauge. Unblocked row gauge should be 60 rows per 10 cm/4 in, and blocked 50 rows per 10 cm/4 in.

Yarn:
Using ColourMart Cashmere 8/44NM 4ply wt (900 yd / 823 m per 150 g), you will need 660 yd / 600 m (109 g) of the main colour (red in the sample shawl), and 490 yd / 450 m (82 g) of the contrast colour (light grey).

Using Malabrigo Yarn Lace (470 yd / 430 m per 50 g) you will need two skeins of the main colour and one skein of the contrast colour.

Note: You may need more yards/meters if choosing another yarn, or if your gauge is different from the suggested one.

Other supplies: Waste yarn (20 cm/8 in piece will do), crochet hook size 3 mm (or US C) and two stitch markers.

Valmiin huivin koko riippuu luonnollisesti käytetystä langasta, puikoista ja tiheydestä - mallihuivi oli pingottamatta 153 cm leveä ja 70 cm syvä, pingotettuna 174 cm leveä ja 78 cm syvä.

Kerrostiheys on tässä huivimallissa tärkeämpi kuin silmukkatiheys. Kerrostiheyden pitäisi olla noin 60 krs/10 cm pingottamatta ja 50 krs/10 cm pingotettuna.

Lanka:
ColourMart Cashmere 8/44NM 4ply wt (823 m/150 g eli noin 550 m/100 g).
Myös fingering-vahvuinen lanka sopii mainiosti, huomioi kuitenkin, että lankaa menee enemmän kuin alla mainittu määrä. Samoin huivista tulee silloin aika suuri.

Langanmenekki: Pääväriä 109 g (600 m), aloitusväriä 82 g (450 m).

Muut tarvikkeet: Kaksi silmukkamerkkiä. Jos haluat tehdä väliaikaisen aloituksen, tarvitset myös jämälankaa ja 3 mm virkkuukoukun.
