This is a cozy and thick cowl that uses the double knitting technique. This means that on the outside of the cowl, you will see your main color (MC) with your contrast color (CC) as the border and design. On the reverse side of the cowl you will see your CC with your MC as the border and design. You will need to have mastered both the double knitting technique and double knitted designs to work this cowl, but it is a manageable second project for double knitting. You can learn to double knit and do your first double knit project by heading to my Instagram (@irunthisknit) and checking out the instructional videos in my “DK KAL” highlight. NB: This is a fully reversible cowl due to the nature of double knitting, so you don’t need to worry about which yarn you designate as your MC and which as your CC.

For this cowl I used Lion Brand’s Heartland Yarn which is an Aran acrylic yarn. You can use whatever yarn you desire, although I recommend a wool or acrylic blend for extra warmth!

NB: I am a loooooose knitter so if you are a normal or tight knitter expect to size up in needles to match gauge or go up a weight class for your yarn.

This pattern is written for one size and will comfortably fit most adults. It can also be a looser cowl for children. You can add stitches in between the two charts that make up the colorwork to make it a wider circumference if you desire a looser fit.

You will need approximately 130 yards of each color for this cowl, as is. You will need more yarn if you add stitches between the charts, although you shouldn’t need more than 1 ball of Heartland yarn in each color.
