Sun blind cardigan
Just the right piece for summer: something colorful & cheerful and an outlook on the Spring & Summer season to come!
This design is a coorperation between my friend ‘subknits’ Sabine and me. The idea of a cardigan with stripes in different sizes had been in the back of Sabine’s head for quite a while. Then last December, Sabine fell in love with the new pastel colors of Holst Coast, while I decided I wanted to try out the 2018 Isager Bomulin shades. So this was the start …
Apart from the two main colors, a light and a dark one, you need several (up to 11) contrast colors, in quantities from 1g (for a small sleeve stripe) up to 10-15g (for edgings), so this is the perfect project for using up leftovers.
The cardigan is worked completely seamless. It is started at center back with a provisional cast-on for a contrast color stripe. The fronts are started separately (with CC edgings and short rows for the V-neck) and joined with the back at the shoulders. Side seams are closed by 3-needle-bindoff. Shoulder and sleeve decreases are worked at the top and concealed by a tiny 3-stitch-pattern called ‘Wheat Ear’. Apart from the Garter edges, the whole cardigan is worked in Stockinette.
With the Coast yarn, Sabine had a row gauge of as many as 30 stitches on 10cm, while Anke achieved 26 stitches with the Bomulin, which is why we have decided to include instructions for both gauges. The advantage of this approach is that it allows a wide range of summerly yarns, including my favorite yarn for all seasons, Das Regenbogenschaf Pinta, which combines wool with 20% silk and 20% plant fibre.
The yarn company of one of the suggested yarns has recently changed its name: from Regenbogenschaf to SKUDDERIA.
The length can be customized most easily. And you can even postpone deciding on the width until the moment you reach the side seams, when you already have something to try on – more fitted or oversized, just choose as you go.
Available sizes: S, M, L, XL, XXL, for a bust width range from 104 to 136cm.
Errata:
- In the calculation scheme of how many sts you need for the sleeves, it should be “divide by 5,2” (or 5.2) instead of “divide by 52” => corrected on document version 1.0.1
