This little cardigan is based on The Princess in Disguise tale. It’s a bit grim at the beginning, as the king’s dying wife makes him promise not to marry anyone less beautiful than she. He looks for a long tme and finally decides that the only woman as beautiful as his dead wife is his daughter! The princess sets before the king an impossible task of giving her a dress as golden as the sun, one as silver as the moon, one as glittering as the stars, and one made of a thousand skins. He manages to procure these garments, and of course she runs away of course and hides that she is a princess.

She dons the skins, packs some gold jewelry and her impossible dresses, hides in a tree, and is found by a new king and his hunters. He takes her home to be an assitant to the cook, but she can’t resist attending a ball where the Prince falls in love with her. She wears each of the impossible dresses in turn, leaving a little gold jewel when she runs from the prince each time. Finally, he determines that the beautiful woman is really his little kitchen assitant, a princess, and the woman he wants to marry!

This sweater is inspired by the dresses as beautiful as the sun, moon, and stars. With stripes of each color, knit from the top down and with raglan increases, this sweater uses snaps and buttons to stay on your little one. You can omit the buttons if you like.
