The Sun on Sand fingering-weight shawl is perfect for beach knitting - or just thinking about the beach! All of the stitch patterns were chosen to minimize counting and maximize your enjoyment as you knit this relaxing shawl. And each one has a little note describing its place in the beachy theme.
This pattern has been tech edited and test knitted.
Difficulty: Advanced beginner. The instructions are fully written out, not charted; the stitch patterns have very short repeats. There are detailed pictures of each stitch pattern.
Skills to have (or enjoy learning) for this pattern: k2tog, p2tog, yarn over, slipped stitches, kfb, pfb.
Yarn: Fingering/sock yarn, approximately 145 grams/670 yards/610 meters. The sample was worked with Sheepyshire Staple Sock, a 75% superwash merino wool/25% nylon yarn with 460 yards (421 meters) per 100 grams. Other wool and wool-blend yarns, and blends including bamboo, cotton, or nylon would also work. The simple stitch patterns will look great with solids or tonals, but also let you highlight a densely speckled or highly variegated yarn.
Finished dimensions: Approximately 62 x 64 x 46”/155 x 160 x 115 cm, with an 18”/45 cm drop from the long edge to the point, before blocking; see diagram photo to the left. The pattern provides opportunities to make a smaller or larger shawl.
Gauge: 20 stitches and 26 rows to 4”/ 10 cm in stockinette stitch.
Needles: US 8/5.0 mm or size needed to achieve gauge. It is possible to knit the shawl entirely on straight needles, but it will be more comfortable to use a long circular needle so that the stitches can spread out as the shawl grows. The sample was worked initially on a 40”/100 cm needle, switching to a 60”/150 cm long needle towards the end.
