This pattern is for a small square featuring a sun umbrella. This design captures a vibrant summer scene with a background of sun, sea, and sand, and an applique sun umbrella in the foreground. Ideal for creating beach-themed blankets, tote bags, or decorative pillows, this pattern provides all the detailed instructions you need to bring this picturesque summer scene to life. You can purchase this sun umbrella square individually or as part of a set with my other three small beach-themed squares. For a complete seaside experience, consider the full blanket bundle which includes all my beach-themed squares along with detailed assembly and border instructions to create a cohesive and charming beach-themed blanket.

⚠ It is written in English only, using US terminology. If you would prefer UK terminology, please let me know and I can provide this. ⚠

ABOUT THE PATTERN

The pattern includes both detailed written instructions and a chart for the background square, ensuring you have all the guidance needed to bring this delightful sun umbrella square to life. The background is worked in single crochet stitches and chains, while the sun umbrella applique is crocheted separately and sewn on, with the umbrella’s pole added using surface slip stitch. Using DK yarn, a 4 mm hook, and a tension of 18 sc x 18 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm, the square measures approximately 12 cm x 12 cm after blocking. If your tension varies or you use different yarn or hook sizes, your square may be slightly smaller or larger. If you are incorporating this square into my beach blanket, it does not really matter as long as you are consistent; your final blanket will simply end up larger or smaller. The finished square, including the border, has 21 stitches on each side plus 1 stitch in each corner.

SKILL LEVEL

I have assigned an advanced-beginner skill level to this pattern. You should be able to read patterns written in English and be comfortable working in rows. Additionally, familiarity with standard crochet stitches, from single crochet to treble crochet, is required.

MATERIALS NEEDED

DK yarn in chosen colours. For the pattern, I used King Cole Big Value DK (50g/145m). Exact colours and yardage used for the pattern are given within the instructions (approximately 14g/41m total):
⛱ Light blue for the sky
⛱ Dark blue for the sea
⛱ Peach for the sand
⛱ White for the umbrella pole
⛱ 2 contrasting colours for the umbrella - for example, red and yellow
4mm crochet hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle
Blocking board and/or pins

Feel free to explore variations by swapping out yarn and hook sizes to achieve a different outcome, and get creative with experimenting with various colours.
