Suna Asobi is Japanese for “play in the sand” (if the Google translation site I used is correct). I chose that name because I think it really fits the feeling of this shawl. This design consists of 2 different stitch patterns. The body is worked in a modified k3, p3 pattern creating an easy but interesting sand-like texture and the last 15 sts of each right side row are worked in Japanese Wave Lace Stitch. Once you have worked a few rows, the knitting mimics the ebb and flow of waves on the beach.

You might find it helpful to place a marker before the last 15 sts on the right side row to marker the beginning of the Lace design.

This would be a good design for a beginning lace knitter since there are no repeats to track and wrong side rows consist of only knit and purl stitches.

The design is worked from point to point by casting on a small number of stitches and working increases on every wrong side row until the halfway point, and then working decreases on the right and wrong side rows to get back to the original cast on number of stitches. It begins with an I-cord cast on, uses a 3-stitch stockinette rolled edge on each long side and ends with an I-cord bind off. The shape is close to a boomerang but has gentle curves on all sides instead of straight edges or one long smooth curve.
