A Crescent Shaped Shawl featuring a “Sunburst” Motif Edging
The stitch pattern was the inspiration for this shawl. This engaging knit starts with the edging, only fourteen rows complete the sunburst pattern. A simple short row (no wraps) is repeated for the body of the shawl to create the graceful shaping. The I-cord bind off is used to compliment the cast on edge.
Included in the pattern are photos, a complete list of abbreviations, and a stitch glossary.
Skill level: intermediate.
YARN
MADELINETOSH, TOSH DK (100% superwash merino wool; 225yds) color, Calligraphy; 3 skeins
Yarn substitutions: Any DK weight yarn can be used or even a heavier weight yarn. I recommend a light colored yarn to show off the textured stitch pattern.
Gauge: 18 sts and 28 rows = 4in/10cm in stockinette stitch with US 7/4.5mm needles
This is knit at a looser gauge than recommended on the label, which is 20-22 sts = 4in/10cm
Correct gauge is not critical for this project, but your final measurements and yardage requirements may vary if your gauge is different or if you use a different weight yarn.
Size is approximate, you may get a different size especially after blocking.
Before blocking: 72in wide & 14in deep
After blocking: 84in wide & 17in deep
