Sunflower Slouchy Beanie Hat
The pattern is 7 pages long and includes colour photos of the finished item and some of the more trickier parts of the instructions.
The finished item using a 5mm hook and DK weight yarn fits a women’s head of 57cm circumference, or will have a slouchier fit for smaller heads. The project is best suited for intermediate or advanced crocheters, as it uses a range of stitches and techniques, particularly when transitioning from the sunflower to the hat brim. The finished item would make an ideal birthday present or gift, and can be easily made with a couple of evening’s work (it took me a weekend to design and make it).
For this pattern, you will need:
Yarn: DK weight yarn, acrylic, in the following colours (or colours you choose)
- dark brown
- yellow
- orange
- lime green
- aqua green
- mint green
- copper
- turquoise
I’d suggest a full ball (100g) of yellow, but the other colours I used left overs from other projects. Dark brown, yellow and orange are a must for the sunflower, but you can customise your hat using other colours of your choosing.
Hook: 5mm
Tapestry needle
Stitch marker
Scissors
You will need to be familiar with the following terms (US):
Ch- chain
SS/Sl St- Slip Stich
Rounds- working in rounds without turning
SC- Single Crochet
DC- Double Crochet
FO- Fasten off
Magic Ring
Colour Changes
Increase by doing 2 single/double crochets in 1 stitch Sp- Space
St- Stitches
RS- Right Side
WS- Wrong Side
The gauge of the project is based on the sunflower centre (dark brown circle), which measures 11cm diameter when completed.
It’s a great Spring make and an ideal gift for Mother’s Day or birthdays. The loose fit and the fact that there are ‘holes’ in the stitches means that the hat can be worn on cool Spring/Summer days without getting too hot!
