This hat is quick and easy to knit with subtle shaping for a perfect fit to ensure that it stays on through all adventures. An adjustable strap and button adds comfort, security, and elegance. There is also the option to make i-cord ties instead of the button and strap. When my baby was born I had difficulty finding a hat pattern that I really liked, so I began designing my own. After many mediocre attempts this is the first design I created that I absolutely love.

Construction: Sunrise Bonnet is knit from front to back. The back is grafted together seamlessly using Kitchener Stitch for garter stitch. A few rows of ribbing and a strap with multiple button holes are added by picking up stitches along the bottom edge.

Gauge: 18 stitches and 32 rows = 4 in/10 cm in garter stitch

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn ~90-130 yards/80-120 meters. I used Queensland Kathmandu Aran 100 for the purple hat. For the yellow hat I used two strands of fingering weight yarn held together. I think that any worsted weight yarn would work well, and highly recommend a soft super wash merino wool or a merino and silk blend as the best material for baby hats.

Needles: US Size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles, straight or circular
