Designed by Maria Grandfield, the Sunshine and Sprinkles Cowl is a nice introduction to colourwork featuring a simple pattern that alternates between two colours every two stitches, with two nice “rest rows” in between.
Selecting colours with a high contrast will give the best results. More detail about why can be found in a post Lora recently about choosing shades for colourwork over on her blog.
We’ve knitted our samples in Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino which is available in some fantastic shades, but you can use any sport weight yarn.
Another option is to use a double knitting weight yarn, but remember to choose a light yarn, nothing too heavy and to check your tension. Woolly wool whilst the optimum yarn for colourwork, might not be regarded as ‘next to skin soft’ by some people.
Notes
Hold your contrast yarn beneath the main colour as you knit; this will make the contrast yarn “stand out” a little more from the background colour.
