From the Chapter Description: Two pretty lace designs are given as examples, so that both ways of charting lace can be clearly demonstrated…The second of these two patterns is an introduction to the rounded motifs in lace knitting, quite a few of which will be encountered later. In Sunspots the rounded shapes are begun in the usual way, with a five-stitch increase; the “spots” themselves are purled, so the decreases are purled also. This highly unusual lace design is attractive on both sides of the fabric. When pressed only lightly, without much stretching, and used wrong-side out, it makes a pretty lace puff effect like coin dots surrounded by purled openwork.
