Suo, or maroon, falls in the range of warm reds. It is a deep, rich saturated blend of brown, red, and purple. Suo is the name of the sappanwood tree from which the dye comes. Amanuno is linen—a bast fiber of ancient heritage. The graceful drape of linen is amplified as it is pressed, worn, washed, and handled.
This top’s semi-fitted waistline flares to a basketweave pattern at the lower edge. A simple garter ridge finishes the armhole and jewel neck edges. In its simplicity, this piece is elegant by itself, but also layers well under many kimono, such as the Re-Su Katabira (page 64), Nishiki kimono (page 56), and Shimofuri Chairo Ke-Bura (page 20). Suo Amanuno will translate well into any color—it is a classy wardrobe basic that’s better than the T-shirt!
